How Old Are You? Which Surgery Is Best For You?
With media constantly reporting the newest innovations in aesthetic medicine, more and more people are opting for cosmetic surgery. Surgical and minimally-invasive techniques are being refined at a rapid rate, resulting in safer and more effective rejuvenation treatments.
But what procedure is best for what age? The answer depends on the condition of your skin, your facial structure, and your aesthetic goals. For example, eyelid surgery may beneficial for an individual in his or her 30s, but it may be an inappropriate solution for another person of the same age. In addition, the aging process is not necessarily uniform–you may see fine lines etched your forehead, but enjoy a youthful plumpness and volume in the mid-face region.
Lifestyle, habits, and genetics work together to determine how our skin will fare as it ages. However, there are some general guidelines that can help you decide if it is the right time to consider cosmetic surgery.
Procedure | Why People Request It | The Age Range It Most Benefits |
Browlift | To improve sagging skin in the brow and forehead region | 40s to 60s, when wrinkles become prominent. Younger candidates who have inherited a heavy brow may also benefit. |
Eyelid Surgery | To reduce excess skin around the eyelids and make the eyes look more alert | 30s to 40s, or when sagging skin is noticeable. |
Facelift or Neck Lift | To tighten and lift the sagging skin | 40s to 50s, when the skin shows signs of laxity. Different facelift techniques can be used depending on the condition of the skin. Full traditional facelifts are typically done on the older end of the age range, while mini facelifts are excellent for those with earlier signs of aging. |
Fat Transfer | To fill in hollow eyes and correct dark circles | 20s to 50+. Although sunken-looking eyes is associated with aging, some individuals have a genetic predisposition to dark circles and less fat content in the under eye area. A fat transfer can rejuvenate the eye area on both younger and older patients |
Rhinoplasty | To modify the shape and size of the nose | 16+, when the nose has reached its adult size. |
Non-surgical complements | To relax and smooth lines (relaxants) To adds volume (dermal fillers) |
Late 20s – 40s. On younger individuals, relaxants may help delay wrinkle formation. Fillers may be useful to even out facial asymmetries. |
